For many years, cooking and dancing were my means of creative expressions. At a very young age I would lose countless hours painting, using those paint by numbers kits most of the time and I loved it. Family circumstances changed and the painting stopped. I begged my mother to teach me how to cook at the ripe old age of 11. Luckily for many, including myself, she acquiesced and taught me the basics. Although a math major in college, I loved taking classes studying art in various cultures. Western Civilizations was my favorite class. After graduating college, I moved to California. Sometime in my mid 20s, I enrolled in a figure drawing class and found I was quite adept at capturing the essence of the person being drawn. Once again the art stopped. My knowledge of cooking grew and my natural talent for cooking was fed by experimentation and exploration. My dining room table was my palette for many years where I created a visual painting using the table setting and the food to nourish the person and their soul through sight, smells and tastes. I am also a life-long photographer. Things changed again and life brought me back to painting.  I learned that I have a natural sense of color, I love mixing my own colors too. I paint in oils. I paint from photos I’ve taken and sometimes I free form, sometimes creating representational abstract. I love large big flowers and many say my paintings remind them of Georgia O’Keefe unplugged. I have studied with Marcia Cummings, a sculptor and painter, with Glen Orbik, a well-known American illustrator, at the California Art Institute, with Bob Moskowitz, Head of the Art Department at Ventura College and an accomplished artist and with Jill Sattler at Santa Barbara City College, a well known abstract painter.  I have been commissioned to do oil paintings of dogs and an abstract. I also completed a triptych of digital flower paintings using healing frequencies while creating them. I am doing more abstracts now, studying with Jill Sattler, growing, learning and expanding. My painting is changing and growing. Studying abstracts has really opened me up more. Many of my paintings have an unplanned space theme. They are filled with feelings and are full of light, love and joy.  Many are filled with healing frequencies as well. In the last few years, I’ve begun writing and have a blog. It has become another creative outlet for me as well. I would love to heal the world with my paintings and my photos. My dream is that this comes through in my work.  Enjoy!  Life is to be savored either through taste, feel, smell, dance, visual or sound! Take your pick. I love them all!  How about you? About the Artist: Michele Chapin has been a working California artist for the past 30 years, exhibiting and receiving countless awards for her sculptures and contributions to the community where she has lived. She attended the University of California in Santa Cruz studying drawing, printmaking, jewelry, sculpting in bronze, clay and metal, art history and psychology. As a founding member of the Santa Cruz Art Center, she had the opportunity to work with several professional artists working in a variety of mediums, and it was there, she carved her first stone. In 1987, Michele relocated to Ventura and with the purchase of a minimal amount of tools, began teaching herself to carve. Many of her sculptures are created from stones that she has quarried from local deserts in California, as well as purchased from other states and countries. Desert Flower, a sculpture created during this time, was one of the first pieces purchased for the Ventura Municipal Art Collection on permanent display at City Hall. Several of her first major projects, collaborating with Master Gardner Richard Sanders, were creating sculpture gardens for the Ventura County Symphony Design House. Her sculptures included stone benches, and fountains that incorporated carved hydroplaning marble spheres. From these projects she was commissioned to create and install a monumental granite sphere fountain by U.S. Sales Corporation in Moorpark, California. These fountains were the first of their kind to be created in the United States. In 2009, Mayor Christy Weir awarded her with the Mayor’s Arts award for her achievements and contributions. In 2011 she received an Art Star Award from the Ventura County Arts Council for her achievements as a sculptor, and outreach in the community. In July 2010 she was featured with a 3-month solo exhibition, at the grand reopening of the Ventura County Museum. The Museum showcased 14 of her stone sculptures, with major works on loan from several private collections. In 2011 her sculpture Divine Balance was purchased by the Ventura County Museum for their permanent collection.  In 2013 Michele collaborated with artist Susan Petty producing a 3-month exhibit “Old Hands New Works” where she exhibited a time capsule of sculptures including her first carving to present day.  In April 2014 Michele had a Solo Exhibition - “Chasing Beauty”  at Minan Gallery in Los Angeles of new works. This year’s body of sculptures are created from the inspiration of images captured daily with an Iphone 5 camera. At present, Michele works as a community arts activist, teacher and stone sculptor creating public and private commissions.  Her studio and gallery are open during First Fridays Ventura and Westside Ventura Artwalks when she and partner, Guy Wilson, host monthly free community exhibitions showcasing Michele’s sculptures and several artists and musicians of all ages. As a community arts activist, one of her goals is to bring art to the people and people to the art, by putting art back into the community through classes and exhibitions in her open air Stoneworks Studio, and garden.

    Drawing/Colored Pencil
My name is Gabriel Chavez, and I currently reside in Ventura, California. My passion has always been in the arts, specifically in drawing and painting. I have originally developed my art through portraiture, and while in college, I utilized colored pencil to make portraits that were photo-based. I continued this and expanded into oil painting, driven by the techniques of the medium and its concepts. A more recent inspiration took place, in which I began to re-access art altogether. After spending a few years diving into metaphysics, I reinformed my paintings with inner vision. Now my primary subjects are abstract, and I focus on the representation of inner reality. I use the traditions of sacred geometry and biomorphic forms which relate to Nature and to the Cosmos at large. Chiaroscuro is also a dominating force in my paintings. Currently, I am working on a new series of abstract paintings that relate to the intimate processes of the Earth and of Life.

I make art and share ideas by taking the question marks in my life and bending them into exclamation points. I employ an iterative process honed by experience in research, athletics, and art to present complex ideas in compelling ways. For over a decade I have explored and combined traditional art materials with digital techniques demonstrating creative fluency. By moving with ease and grace through a variety of media, I focus on communicating ideas and I gain knowledge in the process.I work intuitively and iteratively when creating art and often apply scientific methodology to my art practice with the rigor of a seasoned athlete.By observing human behavior, asking generative questions, and analyzing information, I experience daily how a disciplined process leads to comprehension of complex data and ideas. I use my artistic sensibility to present my findings in unique and compelling ways.I appreciate the interdisciplinary nature of the artist's life. I aspire to travel, to teach, and to create while extending my exhibition record. Being nourished creatively while partaking in a challenging path is a delight, and I particularly relish learning along the way.Art is the most practical, essential, and exciting field of work in the world today, and I look forward to sharing it with you.PETE IPPELBorn: 1979, Oak Park, ILLives and works in Ventura, CAemail: pete@hypermodern.netweb: http://peteippel.comblog: http://hypermodern.netEDUCATIONSAN FRANCISCO ART INSTITUTE, 2002-2004M.F.A., New Genres, 2004Critique seminars: Tony Labat, Paul Kos, Tom Marioni, Trisha Donnelly. Artists and craftsmen of every kind run in my family, so I grew up surrounded by creativity.  Naturally, my parents weren't surprised when I began drawing at an early age.  After graduating from high school, my father encouraged me to study Illustration in college.   And, thankfully,  my husband of nearly 30 years has cheered my artistic journey along every step of the way. Growing up on the California Central Coast near some of the most beautiful beaches, mountains, and countryside in the world, my artistic senses were nurtured.  This region is rich in nature, marine life, and wildlife so I would often get lost in thought watching the way light played on the sea, plants cast shadows, and how wildlife appeared and then seemingly disappeared into the environment.  My family also includes several musicians, which was highly influential on my creative expression.  Frequent references to music genres and instruments manifest in my work. One day, on an unplanned visit to an art glass supply shop in Ventura, CA, I was intrigued and signed up for a stained glass class.  It was instantly apparent that I was in my element, and my glass art journey began.  Now in my second decade as a working glass artist, I have developed technical knowledge of glass as a medium, finely honed mechanical skills to shape its form/appearance, and infused creative elements to convey storytelling with it.

Galina Richardson was born in Volgograd, Russia and has been drawing and painting ever since she was a young girl. Growing up, she was also interested in languages and she ultimately sought a formal education in the field of linguistics. While working as a technical translator in Surgut, Western Siberia, Galina met her American husband. She soon joined him in Ventura, California and has called this coastal city her home for more than twenty-five years. Galina studied graphic design at UCSB and for many years worked as a graphic designer, creating logos, advertisements, posters and brochures. She went on to work for the FBI in Los Angeles as a language analyst, but her passion for art remained. Mostly self-taught, Galina is a passionate watercolorist. She loves the freedom, spontaneity and delicate nature of the watercolor medium. Capturing people in all their uniqueness has been the main driving force behind Galina’s artwork and her two daughters often provide inspiration for her paintings. Galina frequently exhibits at the Buenaventura and Thousand Oaks Art Associations, where her artwork has received recognition from her peers and the public. She paints plein air, enjoys life figure drawing, attends classes and workshops taught by renowned local and international artists, including Keiko Tanabe, Nick Runge, Cuong Nguyen, Gerald Brummer, Paul Jackson, Jeannie Vodden, and Judy Koenig. Galina is also an avid runner and has recently reached her goal of completing 50 marathons.

(2001) B.A. : (Art): Westmont College, Santa Barbara, Ca. (1999) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My work tends to be confrontational yet inviting. I focus on the juxtaposition of contradictory ideas, materials, styles, treatments, processes, and textures in order to discover a balance between extremes, and it is this clash that I am most interested in. Part of my inspiration is derived from living all of my life near the Southern California coast; living on the edge where the land meets the sea, where the vastness of the ocean is surrounded by the sensory overload of civilization. By using a wide variety of materials and techniques, I seek to convey these extremes (and the tensions among them), to the viewer. I work with various media, styles, and genres that at times overlap within the same piece and/or series of pieces, resulting in what I would refer to as a hybrid. The synthetic as well as natural materials I use are very important to the work. They include wood, rusted metal, sand, sawdust, glass, cement, dirt, stain, gravel, acrylic, resin, nails, nuts and bolts, a variety of pollen and other organic material, and basically anything that is at my disposal. I am also fond of incorporating found objects and icons from various cultures throughout history into my art, sometimes transforming, mutating, and distorting them so that they no longer exist as they did in their original format. This leapfrogging among various media, materials, and styles is due to the joy and challenges I face when experimenting and exploring the extremes, and is what keeps me charged and motivated to keep pursuing the unknown. Ultimately, I strive to convey the contradiction and clash of the natural and the manufactured, giving new meaning to concepts and objects that may no longer be recognizable in their original format. I attempt to blur the boundaries between art and life, reality and fantasy - to expose and examine the gray area among them. I hope to share these sensations of living on the edge, and the bombardment of sensory overload that often characterizes contemporary life. In the end, my intentions are to raise questions and invite various interpretations while sifting through the quagmire I deal with to get from point A to point B during the journey of life, allowing the viewers to form their own opinions as to the meaning of it all.
