The film opens with an assured Mr. Stewart instructing a group of female ballet dancers at the Glorya Kaufman Dance Studio at Julliard. The windows give a splendid view of some distinguished architecture in wintry Manhattan. One might be apt to wonder, as one watches, what the title “Match” has to do with ballet or winter cityscapes. Smartly adapted by writer/director Stephen Belber from his own play, “Match” has enough meaty and engaging character material to effectively sidestep the very theatrical contrivance of its plot premise. The Juilliard professor is interviewed by a woman and her husband (the excellent Carla Gugino & Matthew Lillard) for the woman’s dissertation on the history of dance in 1960's New York. The dynamic between these three characters builds into an increasingly tense choreographed ballet of its own. As things evolve, it becomes increasingly clear that this couple have more on their minds than the art of dance. Prolific independent film producer Rick Rosenthal (director of “DRONES” VFS 2014) will return to the VFS for a stimulating post-screening discussion about the evolution of this remarkable project.
