Help us in our mission to recognize extraordinary efforts that changed lives.
The Westpark Story Project began as a Community Mural Exhibit in partnership with The805Live, Bell Arts Factory and PuraAvenida, all grass-roots local community groups, as part of the Pura Avenida Mural Dedication held on March 26, 2022.
“Undocumented: The Westpark Story” mural exhibit featured forgotten community art and murals that were created between 1976-1996 by local Ventura Avenue youth, families and Homies as part of the City of Ventura’s Gang Prevention and Intervention Programs, based out of Westpark Community Center, coordinated by the City’s first Gang Prevention and Intervention Program Coordinator and community activist Berta Payan.
The Westpark Story goes beyond the images we have preserved and presented; it speaks to the success of hundreds of young people who changed their lives for the better and are themselves, living history. The stories behind the beautiful community murals must be shared.
We want to bring awareness to these lost and forgotten works of art, the stories behind their creation, and sharing this valuable, culturally rich (mostly Chicano) collection of Homie Arte. In addition to creating awareness, documenting and celebrating our community art , we are working to preserve our remaining murals through Historical Landmark designations.
