John Robertson: “Fields

John Robertson: “Fields"

Presented by Vita Art Center at Vita Art Center

Opening Reception: Friday, November 3 from 6-9 p.m.
Ventura artist John Robertson will be presenting his new group of large-scale paintings, “Fields” at the Vita Art Center Gallery, 432 N Ventura Ave, Ventura (located at the Bell Arts Factory). All are invited to come and meet John at the opening of the show, November 3 from 6-9 p.m. “Fields” represent the time John has spent in the agricultural fields of Ventura, Oxnard and Santa Paula, Ca. All of the large-scale images range between five and eight feet incorporating a technique of applying acrylic paint to the canvas with cement trowels. John then scrapes away surface paint and re-applies more layers. This process builds up a texture of paint, which gives a sense of movement and depth to the work. The paintings are then hung without a structure, similar to a tapestry or banner.

John Robertson is a primitive, impressionistic painter who may distort an image to make the painting more than a visual, realistic copy of the subject. John says, “I don’t feel a desire or need to reproduce a subject exactly as it may look to a casual viewer. I want to create a colorful interpretation of the subject, something that will draw the viewer deeper into the painting. The painting needs to be more than just a visual representation. Some of my paintings may be a little harsh but most people appreciate my strong point of view and like to see the subjects interpreted in this manner.”

John Robertson's most recent commercial project is paintings for the new MLB Atlanta Braves stadium, SunTrust Park, in April 2017 and the remodel of the NFL Green Bay Packers suites area of the stadium, opened in July 2017. He has created work for the Minnesota Vikings Football Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota, opened summer of 2016. He also created large-scale paintings for the new San Francisco 49ers, Levi Stadium. Sports Artist John Robertson has created art for Fox Sports, Fox Sports Net, Prudential Sports Arena (at the time home of the New Jersey Nets and the New Jersey Devils), the Amway Sports Arena, Orlando Florida home of the Orlando Magic and various other commercial projects, including movies and television. He has also created a number of images for private clients.
