Free Rising Stars Concert

Presented by Ventura Music Festival at First United Methodist Church of Ventura

The Ventura Music Festival will spotlight talented young classical and jazz musicians at a free concert at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 6 at the First Methodist Church of Ventura, 1338 E. Santa Clara Street in Ventura. The musicians range in age from middle school to college and are from various communities in Ventura County.

The classical musicians of the evening, Grace Chen, Kaytlyn Becker, Dalton Hayse, David Gatchel and Kallen Meyer will perform concertos from composers including Camille Saint-Saëns, Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms and Claude Debussy.

In addition to seven outstanding young classical musicians, the 2016 concert features special appearances by the Camerata Chamber Choir, the Las Robles Children’s Chorus' most senior level soprano, alto, tenor and bass ensemble, who range in age from 14-18 years. Director Edward Rouse will guide the choir as Christine DeKlotz accompanies them to Little Birds by Eric Whitacre, Stars I Shall Find by David Dickau, Look At The World by John Rutter and Walkin' Down That Glory Road arranged by Mark Hayes.

The musical evening will also spotlight a jazz quartet composed of finalists in the 2016 and earlier VMF Jazz Competitions. This group will include the young and talented musicians Alex Smith on drums, Chris Seagraves on bass, Rachel Flowers on piano and Blake Kasting on guitar. They will be performing Footprints by Wayne Shorter and Impressions by John Coltrane.

About Rising Stars: The “Rising Stars” has been the Festival’s annual spotlight on talented teen-aged classical musicians whose playing has been lauded locally, but for whom the Festival appearance is often their professional debut. Many past rising stars have gone on to win important competitions to careers in concert halls than span the globe. Rising Stars are selected by Artistic Director Nuvi Mehta in consultation with noted music teacher Edward Frances.
