Teen Art Classes at Vita, Ages 13-18

The mission of Vita Art Centers Teen Art Program is to connect teenagers to contemporary visual art and artists in Ventura. Our Teen Art Program presents opportunities for young people to meaningfully interact with outstanding local artists from a variety of disciplines. PAINTING
WEEK 1, June 15 - June 19, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m., Fees: $120.
Instructor: Megan Bisbee. In this painting course, learn key elements including tone, form, light, space and color. Practice sighting, proportion, color mixing and paint handling through a variety of approaches. Work with a professional teaching artist to develop color theory, brush strokes, tone and color. This course focuses on developing technical skill, while exploring shape, form, and value.

PLEIN-AIR PAINTING
WEEK 2, June 22 - June 26, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m., Fees: $120.
Instructor: Christine Beirne. In this one week plein-air workshop, students will paint out in the field and learn how to find a good composition when so many things are competing for your attention. How to block out your darks and lights so that you aren't "chasing the light" as time goes by. Color theory, as it applies to plein air painting will also be discussed. All students should be dressed to be outside and have water, and sunscreen.
"En plein air" is a French expression which means "in the open air" and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors.

CUBA -VENTURA, MURAL PROJECT
WEEK 3, June 29 - July 3,  9 am - 12 pm, Fees: $120.

Instructor: MB Hanrahan. The Vita Art Center is pleased to present a one week mural workshop with noted Cuban artist, Pedro Miguel Gonzalez Pulido and Ventura artist MB Hanrahan.This is a fantastic opportunity for young artists to work on a large-scale public art project in Ventura. The students will gain hands-on mural painting training- working together as a team; guided through every step of the mural process. Join us in making Art History, creating this cross cultural collaboration. The mural will be showcased in our 2015 Ventura ArtWalk. Pedro will be visiting Ventura for the month of July as a featured international guest artist for ArtWalk Ventura, 2015

FIGURE & PORTRAIT DRAWING 
AT THE MUSEUM OF VENTURA COUNTY
WEEK 4, July 6 - July 10, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. ,Fees: $120.ºº, To register click here
Instructor: Colin Fraser Gray. Figure & portrait drawing are used to heighten skills of observation. Simple tools are taught which help students see the relationships of forms, shapes and values to each other and to the whole. Underlying anatomy is discussed to support the structure of the drawing. Students will draw from a costumed or draped model during this course. The class will look to the Museum's collection as sources for learning and inspiration.

ENVIRONMENTAL DRAWING 
AT THE MUSEUM OF VENTURA COUNTY
WEEK 5,July 13 - July 17, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m., Fees: $120.
Instructor: Barton Choy. The focus of this class will be environmental drawing and sketching, with both in class and off site field drawing. The students will draw from the surrounding architecture at the Museum where there is a wealth of subjects to draw and study. The class will look to the Museum's collection as sources for learning and inspiration.

5-DAY DRAWING INTENSIVE
WEEK 6,July 20 - July 24, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m., Fees: $120.
Instructor: Colin Fraser Gray. Students will draw with a variety of media including graphite, ink and charcoal. Students engage in drawing projects that encourage creative expression, concept development, and advancement of basic drawing skills. Students draw 3D objects and increase their knowledge of the effects of light on form, volume and line.

DRAWING WITH COLOR

WEEK 7, July 27 - July 31, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m., Fees: $120.
Instructor: Megan Bisbee. Students will draw with a variety of colored media including ink, colored pencils, pastels, and gauche to create bold and expressive drawings. Students engage in drawing projects that encourage creative expression, concept development, and advancement of basic drawing skills. The class will look to the Museum's collection as sources for learning and inspiration.

STOP MOTION ANIMATION
WEEK 8, Aug. 3 - Aug. 7, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m., Fees: $120.
Instructor: Ulrike Kerber. This exciting course introduces students to different ways of approaching animation. We'll be using a mix of traditional and modern techniques. including drawn character animation, cut-out animation and character design. The class will learn story boarding, staging, set design and lighting that will all be put together to create a movie. Students will also learn how to post their movies online.

COLIN FRASER GRAY  
Colin Gray departed England's shores for Santa Barbara 26 years ago. Primarily working in sculpture and drawing, he has also completed three permanent public art projects. He has been awarded several grants, including the Santa Barbara County Individual Artists Award, as well as a Pollock/Krasner. He taught sculpture at the College of Creative Studies, UCSB, for nine years where he also received an MFA.

BARTON CHOY 
Barton Choy is a retired Architect that guided his own successful architectural office for more than 40 years. He was also a Professor at the Art Center of Design for 30 years where he taught architectural and environmental design as well as sketching, figure drawing and design representation. He is the recipient of numerous architectural awards and recognized by several Great Teacher Awards from his students at Art Center.

ULRIKE KERBER
Ulrike Kerber is the principal and creative director at Viva Design Inc.  Her designs have won many awards including an Emmy nomination, Art Directors Club, NY festival, Omni awards, BDA, and others. Viva Designs has worked with an impressive list of clients including, Disney, E! Entertainment TV, ABC, Emporio Armani, Sundance Channel, Discovery, OWN, Lifetime, and the list goes on.

MB HANRAHAN
Award winning artist MB (Mary Beth) Hanrahan earned an MFA in sculpture from Humbolt State University. In addition to creating numerous murals throughout southern California, she has experience with a wide variety of media, including photography, graphic arts, and set design. Always dedicated to creating a dialogue about social issues, MB is often an advocate for community ideas through her works of public art.

CHRISTINE BEIRNE
Beirne received her Bachelors in Art from California State University Channel Islands. She's had numerous solo exhibitions. American Artist Magazine selected her painting to promote the Focus on the Masters Studio Artists Tour in the May 2007 issue. Christine was Executive Director for the Buenaventura Art Association for three years and currently spends her time painting on location and at her studio in Ojai, California. She was accepted as an Ojai Studio Artist in 2010 and will be a part of the tour in October. She was an Artist-In-Residence at Studio Channel Islands Art Center in Camarillo, Ca. Christine is an associate member of the California Art Club, Santa Barbara Art Association and a member of the Topa Group.

MEGAN BISBEE
Megan Bisbee grew up in Vermont and in 2005 received her BFA from Alfred University. After graduation Megan lived in Brooklyn New York where she was represented by Lohin Geduld Gallery (NYC) she has also shown at Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center (Buffalo), Tampa Museum of Art, Firehouse Gallery (Burlington, VT) and Flinn Gallery (Greenwich, CT). Megan's work was published in edition #56 of New American Paintings. Reviews of her shows have appeared in Buffalo News and The Gay City News. Megan was visiting lecturer at the University of South Florida and Alfred University. She attended Vermont Studio Center on full fellowship in 2009. Megan is currently attending Pacifica Graduate Institute working towards her Masters.
