"Alice"

Presented by Ventura Film Society and Museum of Ventura County at Museum of Ventura County

Please join the Ventura FiIm Society on Thursday June 18 for legendary Czech director Jan Svankmajer's surreal adaptation of Lewis Carroll's classic children's books, “Alice in Wonderland” and “Alice Through the Looking Glass”. Alice (Kristyna Kohoutova) follows her stuffed rabbit through a portal inside her dresser and is whisked away to Wonderland. While the White Rabbit, Mad Hatter and Cheshire Cat are still present, the familiar magical world and bizarre characters have undergone an unsettling transformation in this director's vision. Mixing brilliantly staged live action sequences with extensive use of stop-motion animation of animals, puppets and other assorted objects, Svankmajer creates netherworlds that cannot possibly exist but do, bizarre characters with no reason for being but the wild imagination of a lonely little girl.

“An extraordinary film that explores the story's dark undercurrents without violating Lewis Carroll's story." – NY Times.
“An astonishing film. Its glorious proliferation of magical transformations works like a charm on anyone who values the imagination.”  Daily Telegraph
