Bonny Butler and Mariah Bentley at BAA Gallery

Bonny Butler and Mariah Bentley at BAA Gallery

Presented by Buenaventura Art Association at Bell Arts Factory

Paintings by Bonny Butler will comprise a solo exhibition Nov. 5-Dec. 24 in Buenaventura Art Association’s Ventura gallery home, Studio 99 at Bell Arts Factory, 432 N. Ventura Ave.

Butler’s “The Language of Color” will have about 50 pieces, from 4 inches square to 25 by 35 inches. The Oxnard artist has worked in watercolor, Chinese brush, mixed media, collage, alcohol inks, acrylics and encaustic wax on canvas, papers and other substrates.

A second BAA artist will display more than a dozen paintings concurrently on the Triangle Showcase in the studio’s lobby area. “Sunrise to Night Skies: Artwork by Mariah Bentley” is the title for her show of watercolor and ink paintings on archival paper.

Receptions for both artists’ shows will be 5-8 p.m. Nov. 5 and Dec. 3, in conjunction with Ventura’s monthly First Friday gallery crawls.

Butler, who returned to art about seven years ago after raising a family, said, “My subjects range from blooms and gardens to expressive landscapes and a new exploration into abstract art. I always loved creating art and now as an emerging artist I just enjoy everything about the process, but the most challenging is selling it.”

In addition to BAA, Butler belongs to Women Painters West Organization and the Santa Clarita Artist Association and has shown her paintings at many L.A. and Ventura County venues over the past couple of years. Her works also can be found online at bonnybutler.com and on Instagram (bonnysue1), Facebook (bonny butler art) and Fine Art America (1-bonny-butler.pixels.com).

Bentley, who is a stay-at-home mom of two young sons in Port Hueneme, said her goal in making art “is to instill a love for the magic of creativity in her children through leading by example and, in the process, becoming who she has always wanted to be.

“My preferred subjects are landscapes, spacescapes and personal nostalgia,” she said, and this show will feature her space- and sky-themed paintings, from 10 by 12 inches to 21 by 24 inches in size.

“My favorite part about creating is the journey,” Bentley said, “not knowing exactly where I’m going with it and then arriving at the destination and having a feeling of being home.”

Her work can be seen on Facebook and Instagram (@mariahbentleyart).

Regular operating hours at BAA’s Studio 99 are noon-4 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

The grassroots Ventura arts group, founded in 1954, also has an outlet at Harbor Village Gallery & Gifts at Ventura Harbor, and art on display at SpiceTopia and Very Ventura, downtown shops on Main Street.
