The Ventura Artists’ Union transforms Art City Gallery into an underwater delight for all ages. Fast swimming fish, languid jellies, playful ponies, and even a blue whale swim ’round the viewer.
An all original artwork exhibition honoring the mystic beauty of the ocean and her wondrous creatures. 20 artists working in an array of materials make this themed exhibit pop with life. Vintage Ventura to just-dried-paint, Oceans 11 features both established artists and fresh new talents to our local art scene in a post-pandemic exhibition that will bring a smile to your heart.
Start with regional pluralist Warren Scherich's painting “We Came from the Sea,” a linear 12' triptych in cool pinks and blues, his unusual cast of characters recently from the ocean inhabiting a Mediterranean Riviera. Or perhaps a Ventura of the future?
A spectacular “Blue Fin Tuna,” by Tyronne McGrath dominates the underwater gallery, possibly hunting the smaller or slower artworks by night. A direct metal artwork with the fisherman's hook still in his mouth as he swims, “Blue Fin Tuna” is deftly crafted from found-objects and wrought iron sporting a rust patina, perfect for hanging in an oak tree or poolside pergola.
Gaze through a life-size Channel Islands Kelp corner fashioned from supple, blonde, repurposed wood by woodworker and painter Marie McKenzie her delicate and ephemeral jellyfish painting entitled “Prehistoric & Current,” floating languidly between the tendrils.
Creatures: jellyfish, seahorse, whale, tuna, starfish, seashells, stingray, cuttlefish, nautilus, mermaid, giant mollusk, blenny, Galápagos riftia, manta ray, a porthole, and days & nights on the beach.
Materials: bronze, steel, iron, granite, marble, onyx, alabaster, oils, acrylics, paper, pigments, resins, shells, ceramics, wood, and love.
