Request for Proposals

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Cassie Lawhead and the Montalvo Community Council were awarded a grant of $7,500 for a mural on the building at the corner of Ventura Blvd and Grand Ave. The Montalvo neighborhood will also be receiving a “facelift” with a new sidewalk project set to break ground in Fall 2021. The intersection is the perfect place to install a mural that will build community pride and announce to the motorists on the freeway that this little historic community is thriving!

BUDGET: An Honorarium will be offered of $7,500 for an approximately 60 ft wide by 15 ft tall mural located on the freeway facing side Carbine saw building at 2521 Grand Ave, Ventura, CA 93003. The budget will be all-inclusive, and must cover all expenses associated with the concept, implementation, and post-implementation of the commissioned mural, including design development, production, and execution.

ELIGIBILITY: This Request for Proposals is open to professional artists, artist teams, or arts organizations who live, work, or operate in the County of Ventura.

SELECTION PROCESS: Review and approval of all proposals received before or on the deadline of May 18, 2021 will be made by the grantee and building owners, with input from the Montalvo Community Council. Final approval of the selected design will go before the Arts & Culture Commission in June of 2021.

MURAL SPECIFICATIONS: The mural area is approximately 60 ft wide by 15ft tall. The design needs to be separate from the Carbide Saw signage - leaving a 3 ft wide border around the sign free of artwork. The design will NOT include any current event or pop culture references. The design will only include images that reference the word MONTALVO and its history. Information about the history of Montalvo as well as historic photos and design elements are posted to the Montalvo Community Council blog (password: mural.) The mural will include as many historical references as possible in an effort to preserve the history of this area as well as inform residents.

HOW TO APPLY: All application materials must be submitted electronically to montalvocomcouncil@gmail.com no later than May 18, 2021. Please submit a detailed color rendering illustrating your design. We want to see what the design will look like on the wall itself as best as possible. Designs can be hand drawn, but all need to be submitted electronically. Do not send zipped files.
