The Oxnard Film Society will be celebrating the 100th year of the Irish Rising with a screening of the documentary “1916 The Irish Rebellion” on Thursday, April 14 at 7 p.m. at the Museum of Ventura County. Narrated by Liam Neeson, this landmark documentary tells the dramatic story of the events that took place in Dublin during Easter Week 1916, when a small group of Irish rebels took on the might of the British Empire. The eighty minute documentary features a combination of rarely seen archival footage, new segments filmed on location worldwide, and interviews with leading international experts. The film uncovers the untold story of the central role Irish Americans played in the lead-up to the rebellion. Although defeated militarily, the men and women of the Easter Rising would wring a moral victory from the jaws of defeat and inspire countless freedom struggles throughout the world – from Ireland to India.
“A couple of months ago John McNally called me and asked if I could do some programming on the Irish Easter Rising. Fortunately I was able to book this new film produced by the University of Norte Dame.” said George J. Sandoval, president of the Oxnard Film Society.
The event starts at 6 p.m. with live Irish music by the Decker Brothers, and Irish balladeer Willie Quinn, food and drink at the Museum of Ventura County, 100 East Main Street, Ventura, CA; the screening starts at 7 p.m. An exhibit of artifacts from the 1916 Easter Rising, including a full size reproduction of the PROCLAMATION, Irish War Medals, and memorabilia from the more recent conflict in Ireland will be on view. The film will be introduced by John McNally, who recently attended Centenary events in Ireland and will share his first-hand impressions and newest thoughts on the Rising. George Sandoval and McNally will host a Q&A session after the screening.
The Oxnard Film Society, a non profit organization, has been presenting their Monday Night Foreign Film Series since May 2007 in downtown Oxnard.
