"Joanne Julian calls our attention to the beauty and transcendence of the natural world that surrounds us," states contemporary art curator and writer Jay Belloli.
She earned her BA and MA degrees in sculpture and printmaking from California State University, Northridge, and an MFA in painting from Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design. A respected educator, Joanne was a professor, dean and gallery director at College of the Canyons as well as an adjunct professor at CSUN and Art Center College of Design. Her own work employs drawing, painting and monoprinting often combining media and synthesizing fastidiously rendered areas, the risk of a spontaneous flourish of ink or paint and a clean, white space. Haboku or flung ink style is often present in her imagery of birds, botanicals, fish, skies, even large-scale abstract works, but never more so than in her Zen Circle series.
Gallery and museum exhibitions as well as corporate commission projects are seen widely particularly in Asia and Europe as well as the U.S. Her content compels viewers to look but beware as there is often an edge. You won't want to miss this exploration of an artist who intends to evoke an emotional response from her viewers.
