On Friday, November 20, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, the Museum of Ventura County will screen an episode of “Bordertown,” a new animated comedy about two families living in a Southwest desert town on the U.S. – Mexico border which debuts on the Fox Network in January 2016. The series, produced by “Family Guy” creator Seth McFarlane, takes a satirical look at the cultural shifts occurring in America, where the U.S. Census forecasts that by 2017, ethnic minorities will become the majority. The comedy explores family, politics and everything in between with a cross-cultural wink.
“Bordertown” centers on two clans: the Buckwalds and the Gonzalezes. Bud Buckwald is a married father of three and a Border Patrol agent who is just a tad behind the times and feels slightly threatened by the cultural changes transforming his neighborhood. He lives next door to Ernesto Gonzalez, an ambitious family man, who has been in the country less than 10 years, but is already doing better than Bud – which is a bit of an issue for Bud.
Doors open at 5:30 pm, with dinner provided for sale by Aron’s Tacos, and a no-host bar. The episode preview will start at 6:30 pm with an introduction by consulting producer Gustavo Arellano, the screening of Episode 6 of the new series, followed by a Q & A with Mr. Arellano.
“Bordertown” is produced by 20th Century Fox Television. The series is created and written by Mark Hentemann, who also executive produces with Seth MacFarlane. Alex Carter (“Family Guy”) and Dan Vebber (“American Dad,” “Futurama”) are co-executive producers. Lalo Alcaraz (“La Cucaracha”) and Gustavo Arellano (“¡Ask a Mexican!”) are consulting producers.
This event was brought to the Museum by Gustavo Arellano, who is the publisher and editor of Orange County’s alternative weekly OC Weekly, and the author of the column ¡Ask a Mexican!, which is syndicated nationally. Arellano has won numerous awards for the column, including the 2006 and 2008 Best Non-Political Column in a large-circulation weekly from the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies, the 2007 Presidents Award from the Los Angeles Press Club and an Impacto Award from the National Hispanic Media Coalition, and a 2008 Latino Spirit award from the California Latino Legislative Caucus.
