Focus on the Masters kicks off its 2015-16 Artist Spotlight season on November 7 in the Screening Room of Brooks Institute in Ventura. The Spotlight interview will feature the inkspots, a collective made up of area printmakers. Founder Virginia Furmanski will be joined by Bay Hallowell and Inés Monguió in a panel discussion led by Dr. Judy Larson.
The inkspots were formed in 2007 by Virginia who explains that the group is greater than the sum of its parts. “We take classes together. We learn new techniques.”
Not that the group marches in lock step. Each artist’s work is as individual as the artist herself. Their techniques include monotype, monoprint, drypoint etching, lithography, solarplate etching, woodcuts, linocuts and relief work.
Bay Hallowell’s career includes education coordinator at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh. Bay feels that everything she creates is “an experiment, a blend of careful deliberations and in-the-moment decisions. Inés Monguió, clinical neuropsychologist, states “the time spent in the creative process actually recharges me, even though my body may ache.”
Moderator Dr. Judy Larson, who is a printer herself, is the first holder of the R. Anthony Askew Chair in Art at Westmont College, where she directs the Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art and teaches art history.
