Visual Arts: Painting
Kay Zetlmaier has an extensive education in art. An undergraduate art major at Pasadena City College and Cal State University, Long Beach, she earned her Bachelor of Arts in 1972. Postgraduate honors came later in life with a Masters degree from Cal State University, Dominguez Hills.
In the last few years, Kay's work has migrated towards capturing sublime moments in the seascape that surrounds her. “I have always been drawn to water in many ways, and now I find great enjoyment painting the spontaneous and unpredictable character of the sea."
Today, Kay splits her time between painting along the California Coast and traveling to the world's most scenic places to seek out new experiences and inspirations for her work. Whether combing ruins of Pompeii, absorbing the French countryside, climbing windmills, or observing glaciers, Kay’s personal adventures, home or abroad are represented in her beautiful work.
Kay retired after thirty years of teaching art to high school students in Ventura County. “Teaching is my vehicle for advocating the importance of art in the lives of our future. Now I am continuing to teach adults in my studio and volunteering with 'Artist in the Classroo' at Somis Elementary School. It helps keeps my life in balance." She is director of the successful Ventura Plein Air Invitational. Held in the fall during ArtWalk, artists from all over California gather together with some of our best locale Plein Air Artists to paint images of beautiful Ventura County.
Kay has shown her work at the Buenaventura Art Gallery and Forest & Ocean Gallery as well as Santa Paula Art Museum, and D.A.Davidson & Co. Gallery.
Memberships include: Buenaventura Art Association and Laguna Beach Plein Air Painter Association.
