The Museum of Ventura County presents “Masterworks of the Museum”, an exhibition that brings together a blend of art and artifacts from the late 19th century to the present, emphasizing the significant breadth of the museum’s collection. This exhibit, which commemorates our Grand Re-opening, explores how the museum has honed its collecting strategy over the past century to acquire significant work relating to Ventura County. This exhibit includes iconic works by artists who have made significant contributions in their respective fields, and is presented in a way that underscores the diversity of themes and styles in the collection. Monumental paired canvases by Carlisle Cooper, depicting the human form in bright blue hues are displayed near a diptych by Hiroko Yoshimoto in muted tones, depicting the destruction of nature. Each set of paintings appears decorative, but invites closer scrutiny to ascertain its messages. In an adjacent gallery, Beatrice Wood’s “Chalice” is displayed near the modern, religious “Dancing Mienad” by painter John Nava, whose tapestries are on view in the Cathedral of Los Angeles. This exhibition is on view through May 22, 2017.
